Printing 101

A Crash Course
Printing FAQ's

Why is 2 color printing more expensive than one color printing?
Letterpress method requires that only one color is printed at a time. This means for each color, a separate die plate is made, the machine must be washed and set, and the paper must be fed and pressed one at a time, running more paper for the first color to ensure that there are enough good prints for the second color’s run to be completed. In short, a second color is essentially an additional job printed on the same paper.

What makes Bell’Invito's quality different that other letterpress printed products?
Historically, leaving a depression on the paper was a sign of sloppy printing. Printers wished only to kiss the paper so they the ink was lying flat on the surface. Today’s letterpress method in growing popularity has required the exact opposite from the vintage technology. A deep impression denotes that the paper was fed through a letterpress as opposed to a desk-top printer. Leaving a sign of craftsmanship and elegance. In today’s letterpress, a clean, deep channel at which the ink rests at the bottom – and not on the sides – is one indication of an expertly trained pressman. Bell’Invito’s print quality largely relies on methods we’ve created in-house on machines built to flat print as early as the late 1800’s. Because we choose to hand feed our machines, each piece is checked as it enters and exits the press for impression quality and a highly refined margin of ink consistency. Slight variance denotes the best in hand-fed quality. No ink variance points to a mechanically-fed machine, and too much variance seems to reveal an untrained, or beginner’s eye.

Our materials make a difference! Although more printers are rising to the demand of thicker, soft papers, Bell’Invito has consistently employed Fabriano 640gsm stocks since its conception. The writing and impression quality of a Fabriano stock, although more frequently mimicked today, is still unrivaled. The creation of thick stock domestically employs the process of laminating layers of paper together, while Fabriano papers offer a full range of thick cotton, unlaminated papers, superior for printing.
