Calligraphy is the art of producing decorative handwriting or lettering with a pen or brush. Calligraphy is not a typeface.

Calligraphy refers exclusively to hand-penned lettering, while script is the correct term for a computer-generated stylistic font. While one may not be able to tell the difference between a well-designed script font and well-executed calligraphy at first glance, the cost, turnaround time and output styles differ greatly between calligraphy and script fonts.

Calligraphy can be penned by an artist and scanned for digital use
or etched into plates for printing, as is the method used to create invitations and stationery.

Calligraphy can also be applied directly to a substrate by the calligrapher. This is done for applications where multiple copies are not needed of one particular name or phrase, as in addressing envelopes, personalizing formal invitations, and penning guests' place cards.
