CELL PHONES

When cell phones should and should not make an appearance at the dining table.

NOT FOR TALKING Dining out with others? Move the cell phone ringer to off or vibrate. If you must talk, step away into a more private setting, and keep it short. If you haven’t yet mastered boundaries here is a sample script in response to a caller, “It’s great to hear from you! I’m out at dinner but can call you back in a couple of hours.” Do not keep people waiting on you at the table. This, too, is inconsiderate behavior. Don’t get caught in the excuses trap.

NOT FOR IGNORING When you are with people, the present company gets your sole attention.

YES—FOR MENU READING Some restaurants kept the menu digital. During cold and flu season especially, feel free to browse an electric menu on your phone. Once your decision is made, put your phone away—not on the table.

FOR QUICK REFERENCE At a casual scene, a quick Google search or flash of that photo for emphasis on your story is just fine. Let’s be real. But, you also need to know where the line is set. Scrolling or searching for more than a few seconds, so that it holds the flow of the conversation, is bad form. In a more upscale setting (think white tablecloths), keep your stories with photos and Google searches for another time and place. Keep your phone tucked away and stay present.

YES—ALONE WITH NO ONE AROUND I’m adding this due to popular demand. Yes, if you are in a relatively empty area, it’s not rude to be on your phone reading or passing the time. When it becomes rude is when you are unable to engage with waitstaff or you keep someone waiting due to your involvement on your phone. Be considerate of your volume and your shared common space..
