Custom vs. Bespoke Stationery: What It Costs and How Long It Takes
There are two real ways to buy something beautiful. You can take an existing design and make it your own. Or you can ask for something that does not yet exist and have it invented for you. Both are luxuries. Only one of them requires a designer to start from a blank page — and that is the difference that sets the price and timeline.
The short version
- Personalize for the price shown. Every design in our collection can carry your name, choice of phrase, or monogram; colors; and etiquette-guided wording — at the price on the piece, with optional upgrades.
- Bespoke — by our definition — a fully personalized product created specifically for a client from the bespoke collection we offer online, is offered at the prices shown, simply because we know all the pieces that make up the order. Completely Custom orders come at a comparable printed-piece price, but because someone is designing it from ground zero — no complicated pricing already figured, no versions made available, no colors known, no materials researched and already priced, no existing plates or timelines created — the same specifications will start around a minimum of $1,000 more.
- Plan on two weeks to two months. Personalizing is quick; original design and engraving take longer, by nature. Once proofs are approved — which can take days or weeks — production begins, which industry-wide takes two weeks to two-plus months for fine printing.
- A rush can approach double the price. Some methods — engraving especially — set their own pace and can't truly be hurried. Rush production further complicates processes that are already rare and complicated, leaving the producer with a higher risk of internal redo or a compromised finished product and no time for the necessary fix. For this reason, rush costs are higher the more complicated a piece is to produce — in some cases, rush fees can double the price of your order.
- Our per-piece printing is in line with the finest houses. What you're investing in above that is the imagination.
Most of the confusion in this world comes from one blurred word: custom. People use it for two very different things, and then wonder why the prices are so far apart. So let's un-blur it.
The Two Ways to Work With Us
Bespoke: personalize what already exists from a curated collection
You choose one of our designs, and we make it unmistakably yours — your names, your monogram, your ink, your wording — edited personally for your situation by in-house etiquette expert and Bell'INVITO founder, Heather Wiese. The artwork is done; your perfected details complete it. This is priced exactly as the piece is shown online, and it is where most people begin. It is also where our per-piece prices sit comfortably alongside the great engraving houses: a folded engraved card, a letterpress correspondence set, a place card — priced by print method, paper type, and quantity, the way fine printing has always been priced.
Completely Custom: invent something that isn't there yet
You arrive with a feeling, a venue, a family crest, a color that doesn't have a name. We design it from a blank page, cut and measure each component specifically for your design requirements, and source the papers and materials to carry it to the finish line. A Completely Custom piece is priced like a comparable bespoke piece — same print method, same weight, same shape — plus a minimum of $1,000 for the part that only exists in Completely Custom orders: the design, the complicated estimating and buildout, and the team recalibration it takes to get a highly complicated order precisely right and gorgeous.
If it lives in our collection, you can make it yours for the price online. If it lives only in your imagination, we build it from the ground up — and that begins by adding time to imagine and translate dreams into reality.
Why Custom Wedding Invitations Start at $1,000 More
The number isn't a velvet rope. It's arithmetic. A Completely Custom commission asks for three things a personalized order never does, and each of them is real work by real specialists.
Custom technical design and new production layouts
A blank page is the most expensive page there is. Original artwork, hand-refined until it's right, is hours of a designer's expertise — the same expertise that makes the finished thing look effortless.
A build made to order
New designs always need all-new specifications, new dies, new cuts programmed into equipment — tooling made once, for you, so the press can register exactly your line and no one else's.
Materials and estimates, sourced, evaluated by experts, and programmed into existing systems
The right paper for the requested print method, the exact edge, a lining that matches a swatch you loved, mixing an ink or researching a Pantone — specialty materials are found, ordered, and vetted before a single card is printed. This process requires hours that aren't needed for in-house materials already stocked for our bespoke offerings.
Here's the part worth underlining: the printing itself is priced the same regardless of occasion or use. A two-color letterpress card on double-thick cotton costs the same, whether it's a wedding, a holiday card, or stationery. The room the art takes up on the card, the intricacy of the design, and the coverage of the ink all make up the production price of any fine-printed bespoke card — Bell'INVITO or elsewhere. The Completely Custom add-on to pricing sits on top of a comparable order, due to the design and tooling complexities that must be assessed on request. Every time.
Find a comparable piece in our collection — same method, same paper, same shape and size. That's roughly your production cost. For a bespoke order, that is the price; the listing shows the included bespoke customizations you'll make with us. For a version designed from scratch, add a Completely Custom minimum of $1,000. One number covers the imagination and expertise for further customizations; the other covers the craft itself.
How Long It Takes
Fine printing is a physical thing. It happens on specialized presses, passes through careful hands, and cannot be willed into existence faster by wanting it more. Plan on two weeks to two months, and let our proprietary algorithm tell you where your production lands based on your specific requests and specifications. All licensed Bell'INVITO dealers and Print Shoppe Partners have access to this pricing and timeline software.

What a rush really costs
Yes, we can often move faster. No, it isn't easy or inexpensive — a genuine rush can approach double the price, and the reason is honest. To move your order to the front, we clear time on specialized equipment, compress work that is done by hand, and expedite materials that were never meant to travel quickly. You're not paying a penalty. You're paying the true cost of speed.
And one candid limit: some things cannot be rushed at all. Engraving, in particular, sets its own pace — plates must be made, and each impression pressed one at a time. The finest printing houses draw the same line, excluding their most crafted methods from rush entirely. When time is short, the graceful move is to simplify the method, not to hurry the craft.

- What's the difference between Completely Custom and Bespoke?
- Bespoke is one of our designs personalized for you — for the price shown, no minimum. Completely Custom is a design created from a blank page, and it begins at $1,000 above a comparable printed piece.
- Why is there a $1,000 Completely Custom minimum?
- Because a Completely Custom piece adds three things a personalized order doesn't: original design time, custom complicated pricing and unscheduled client interactions, and specialty material sourcing. Below a thousand dollars, that expertise can't be done justice. At Bell'INVITO, we thoughtfully decline what we see fail all too often — lack of expertise on the design side leading to mis- or unmanaged client expectations — on something extremely expensive. The printing itself is priced the same as a comparable piece; the added cost is for expertise and managed client communication and expectations, and it sits on top.
- Can I personalize your designs without paying the customization fee?
- Absolutely. Every design in our collection takes your names, monogram, ink color, and wording for the price on the piece. Scroll through the images on the product page and read the descriptions to see what customizations are available for the listed price. The addition applies only to original, from-scratch designs. Upgrades are often below the Completely Custom design minimum. You're welcome to call to see if an online piece can be further personalized for a small fee.
- How long will my order take?
- Usually two weeks to two months. Personalizing an existing design is quick; original Completely Custom work, engraving, and layered finishing sit at the longer end.
- Can you rush it?
- Often, though a true rush can approach double the price — the real cost of clearing equipment, compressing hand work, and expediting materials. Engraving is the exception that can't be meaningfully hurried.
- Are your prices in line with other fine stationers?
- On an apples-to-apples basis, yes — our printing is determined by print method, paper quality, and quantity, right alongside the great fine-printing houses of Europe and the U.S. The difference is material superiority — we will only use the best — and our pricing for original designs that no template can offer.
